In September, October, November
the dark pushes back the light

In December, January, February,
there is thinning light, thickening ice.
The moon reflects feathers of sunlight
that press on the contours of the land.

In May, June, July,
The sun blazes sweet release
over the outlines of the land.
Light and all the ferocious colors
push back the dark.

Through all the seasons,
in dark or light,
the world spins so hard,
shakes some of us so hard
in the chambers of our hearts.
