Those opening lines.
And then, I love how it ends, it becomes a kind of death poem, no?
“I suppose I haven’t done and seen
enough yet to go, and, anyway, it may be way on on the way
before one picks up the track of the sufficient”
Isn’t that wisdom? finding the sufficient?
And:
“not a scrap of question holding back.”
Not “no more questions,” but not a single question held back.
Ammons is another one of those amazing masters of poetry. Wisdom is the right word. I love the word “scrap” the next poem I write I am going to use it somehow. The lines you pick out are the exact ones that struck me too. I have read a fair amount of his work but not for a long time. I think I will find his books on my shelf and spend the afternoon being amazed and hopefully inspired.
Damn.

He’s one that I am only peripherally familiar with. Guess it’s time to change that.
Thanks!
