My children will go as soon as they grow
for there ain’t nothing here now to hold them.
The sound of children learning to starve
The sound of children learning to starve
The sound of hunger will wear me out before my time.
The hollow sound of empty bones haunts my sleep.
A heart’s rhythm thrums in my temple.
A vein pulses beyond the reach of my fingers.
The world is a strange place to inhabit,
memory is the DNA of time, a curve, a fold in space
Ahh but mystery is for the fainthearted.
I want to know what my words mean.
I want to look into the eyes of that starving child.
I want to hear her questions, her anguish.
I want to break the fast we have imposed on them
or join in their hunger and share this beggars’ banquet.
It’s a hard rain gonna fall.
There are things in life which change really everything …

You are so right Silvia. I was fundamentally changed, my thoughts, words, poems, actions, are different than they otherwise would have been. I thought the feeling might fade with time but it is not going away. I haven’t felt this kind of fundamental shift in my being for 21 years, the day my son was born, The difference between now and then is now I am writing about it so I am actively examining the process every day. It is such a curious experience for me, to be so affected by a picture of a starving child, or maybe it was the invitation to watch the child die, something about that incident is rocking my world.

I honestly wished that those who really could correct that madness of greed would have such an experience like you had. But then, they are not ready for being altered by something like a starving child. Otherwise there would be no starving child anymore.
Probable it is that what really shocks you: the indifference of those who can sleep well though they produce weapons and stuff we don’t need in order to become even richer and more “powerful”. That little one … had no chance. But you really saw it.
You know what? I think you saw the starving and dying soul of the world.
Keep on loving the world. Do it for that child. I’ll do the same. And others too. World really needs it.
