We pose with electric axes in our hands,
visualizing Vitruvian Man,
full of gestures, meaning, and virtues,
firmitas, utilitas, venustas, veritas.
We look more like clumsy angels,
polishing our gray words with sound
until they become music
and the white bones of feeling rise to the surface,
like stones in a strangled streambed.
This is fantastic. I grew up in the punk/hardcore scene, so this is close to my heart. clumsy angels -is perfect. As is:
and the white bones of feeling rise to the surface,
like stones in a strangled streambed.
Well done!

Thanks Bob, I was reading about Wendy O. Williams the other day and this came out.

I’m not familiar with her. So I had to look her up. But what a life! Did you listen to her music?

Indeed I did, in fact, I listened to Jailbait this morning. It came up in my Youtube playlist.

Nice! I grew listening to more hardcore, like Sick of it All and Gorilla Biscuits. But listened to plenty of punk too.

I’m with Bob. I had to run for the latin sources this time, though. I like that you added “veritas”. Vitruvian Man is so rich for its visual poetry, and I really like “full of gestures, meaning, and virtues”. Also, “polishing our gray words with sound” strikes a very mysterious “note”. And the final lines, as Bob said, are wonderful.

Thanks Holly, I really enjoyed writing this one. I took a little trip down memory lane on Youtube and listened to music from my youth that I haven’t thought about in years.
