The heat moved in today,
making its humid argument
for winter's relief.
But the birds,
blue jays calling out
hawk-like barbs,
a warbler aiming
its yellow replies
at the robin's
cracking whistles,
white-capped sparrows
filling the gaps
with their small
nervous chitters.
All this oracular fever
raising questions for me
about silence:
why seek it,
is it even possible?
Later in the day
two rabbits with wavering ears
join in at the garden wall,
sitting quiet in the wild banter
with padded feet and twitching noses.
Butterflies and flowers
ignite the garden with colorful gestures
as orange petals close up,
tight-lipped in the setting sun.
The dry lawn draws a green breath
to crickets combing electric lullabies,
and a female nighthawk's warning hiss.
As the last peach-smear of light falls away,
the fading glow blurs into shades of darkness.
I sit on the garden wall
listening in this near silence
for answers to my unspoken questions,
grateful for every sound I hear.

Ronald, this is absolutely beautiful. The way you’ve built the poem from the heat and the birds’ ‘oracular fever’ with their hawk-like barbs and yellow replies, through the rabbits joining in at the garden wall, to those crickets combing their electric lullabies and then you arrive at that near silence where you listen for answers to your unspoken questions. There’s such grace in that progression, such wisdom in recognizing that true listening happens in the midst of all this sound, not separate from it. Grateful for this gem.

As always, asking important questions while giving answers without giving the answer. Do we truly want full silence? Sounds maddening!
Well done as always.

Thanks William, I guess that urge to give answers is just about irresistible…my children will attest to it. I’m not ready for the silence yet. ~Ron

No, I don’t think many of us really are ready for the silence. There’s only one way to get that true silence, and I’m trying to put that off for a long time.

Fantastic, Ron! The questions about silence have me musing. And as much I as love summer, lately this humidity has me thinking of that first cool wind. And how wonderful is, “crickets combing electric lullabies”. What a image that is!

Thanks Bob, summer is the best even with the heat.

I really love this. The bird calls and the humid argument for winter’s relief. I feel the dissent…the humidor…
flowing like in run-on heat wave… oral argument, prayer or petition…
for relief…
a furnace of contention.
Silence or Sound. The Sound of Silence. Shrill or too-loud.
And the animals, the rabbits, the blooms too tight-lipped. Judgmental and withholding. Their dismay palpable and cruel and incessant.
